You Drift Away Closer and Closer

Fieldnotes from the Modern Afterlife

Series in Progress (2018)

“…to him the wall / That sunders ghosts and shadow-casting men / Became a crystal, and he saw them thro’ it, / And heard their voices talk behind the wall, / And learnt their elemental secrets, powers / And forces;”

–Alfred, Lord Tennyson

You Drift Away Closer and Closer: Fieldnotes from the Modern Afterlife is an ongoing collection of works which traverse the invisible wall between the living and the dead to create a lexicon of imagery for the modern afterlife.

The works’ intent is not to promote a singular narrative around dying and the afterlife, but to invoke a visual ambiguity that leaves itself open to many narratives, or even any narratives, including the beliefs that the afterlife can only ever be unknown or even that there is no afterlife at all.

You Drift Away Closer and Closer aims to provide a means of contemplation and comfort to those who are navigating loss in the absence of religion or traditional culture. It can also be viewed as a collection of open-ended agnostic updates on the traditional memento mori.
